The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions representing more than 950.000 workers has been informed by the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company of punishment of a bus worker participating in a May Day rally in Teheran.
According to our information 74 lashes were inflicted on the body of Seyed Rasoul Taleb Moghadam, a member of Syndicate of Workers of Teheran and Suburbs Bus Company. After suffering from the 74 lashes, he was transferred to Evin Prison quarantine in an extremely poor physical condition and after that was taken to Fashafoyeh Prison which makes it more difficult for his family to visit him.
Taleb Moghaddam has been an active member of Tehran bus workers’ syndicate for many years. He
has supported the rights of his colleagues and has been threatened by the management of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, its Security as well as the Intelligence Forces several times. After his arrest on International workers’ Day on May 1, 2019, he was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court for two years in prison, two years in exile, and 74 lashes. His appeal has been denied.
LO Norway finds it unacceptable that a person suffer inhuman treatment, lashes and jail sentences for exercising a basic right. We strongly denounce these unjust sentences and demand the immediate release of Seyed Rasoul Taleb Moghadam and other imprisoned workers and labour activists in Iran.
We call on the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran to make sure that Taleb Moghaddam receives medical attention outside the prison as soon as possible. We further remind you that you are responsible for the health of Rasoul Taleb Moghadam, especially taking into consideration the spread of the corona virus in prisons of Iran.
