Iran: all Jailed Workers must be released!

The Islamic regime of Iran constantly violates and suppresses the basic rights of workers, teachers, and citizens in general. The right to strike, to organize, and the right to protest; and freedom of expression is normally suppressed in Iran under the Islamic regime. Many workers, teacher activists, and children’s rights activists are being sentenced to long-term jail sentences, on the grounds of being “a threat to national security. The death penalty is a part of the ruling judiciary system in Iran and last year they even executed a popular wrestling champion, Mr. Navid Afkari for having participated in mass protests. Currently, many worker activists and a large number of protesters are in jail in Iran, and under severe pressure.

Flogging is also a heinous form of the Islamic regime’s judicial system; one example is the recent sentencing of the retired teacher and worker Mr Esmail Gerami to 74 lashes besides his 5 years’ jail sentence, for participating in protests.  One of the disgusting ways to torture and harass political prisoners is to keep them among dangerous and criminal prison inmates and incite these dangerous prisoners to attack the jailed activists. One such example happened this Wednesday the October 8th, when Ismail Gerami and Shapoor Ehsani Rad a retired worker and some other political prisoners were attacked with knives and sharp objects by dangerous prisoners incited by the prison authorities. Several political prisoners were injured in this attack, that happened in front of the prison guards. There have been reports of several examples of this type of attacks before, and even last year a young political prisoner named Alireza Shir Mohammad Ali was stabbed to death by the dangerous prison inmate..

The names of the some of the jailed workers include: Shapoor Ehsani Rad a member of executive board of the Free Union of Workers of Iran; Abolfazl Ghasali; Arash Jowhari; Sajad Shokri; Ali Eshagh, Peyman Farhangian  and Mehran Rouf,, Eamail Geream, Mohammad Davari. As well as 15  teachers including Esmail Abdi; Zeinab Hamrang; Nahid Fathalian;  Hashem Khaster; Mehdi Farahi Shandiz; Mohammad Hosein Seperi; Masoumeh Asgari,  Mohammad Arkian,  Nusrat Beheshti , Mohammad Reza Ramezanzadeh,  Hassan Hosseinkhani,  Hojjatollah Rafeei.

Even those lawyers, who dare to defend the jailed workers and teachers, are being arrested, tried and jailed. Mr Mustafa Nili, a voluntary lawyer of teachers, is one of the lawyers who are in jail. Also Sepideh Gholyan, a young  journalist has been arrested and convicted to 5 years jail, because of her support for the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane workers, and Atena Daemi, a children and women’s right activist and a campaigner against capital punishment  is in jail since  2016 with 7 years  jail and later  her conviction extended  one more year, plus 74 lashes.

The Iranian regime apparently does not represent the people and the workers in Iran; but it is their killer and oppressor. Such a regime should be boycotted worldwide. Its leaders and those responsible should be held accountable because of their crimes against humanity.

So far, a number of international labor unions and well-known social activists have supported and endorsed our call for the expulsion of the Islamic regime from ILO and its global political boycott. Please join us and support our demands.
