Summary of the news of workers’ protests in Iran during the last two weeks

February 13: A group of temporary contract workers working at the National Oil Company in Tehran gathered in front of the company’s building in protest of the low payment of the New Year’s benefit, which was paid as 1 million and 800 thousand tomans.

February 13: A group of telecom retirees from Kermanshah, Ahvaz and Isfahan gathered in front of the Regional Telecommunication General Administration in continuation of the previous protests due to their poor livelihood situation and its worsening every day and the lack of response to their demands. These pensioners have announced that they will continue their protest gatherings until the regulations are fully implemented and their demands are met.

February 13: The strike of Derakhshan copper mine workers in Takht e  Gonbad Sirjan in Kerman province entered its fourth day. The protest of these workers is against the non-payment of wages, the low level of salary and their insurance problems.

Feb. 10, 2023: The over-night sit-in of the workers of Yazd Tire Company: workers protest the low level of salaries and the lack of response to their demands.

Feb. 9, 2023:  Strike of drivers and workers of the oil exploration company, K.EP. Kish in Dareh Shahr, Ilam Province entered its third day protest to poor living conditions and the lack of response to their demands.

Feb. 9, 2023: The workers of Yazd rubber industry rallied in protest to the low level of salaries and benefits and their livelihood problems. The workers were chanting: “Workers, shout for your rights”, “Productivity is enough, our dinner tables are empty”.

Feb. 8, 2023:  Borujerd textile workers, Lorestan Province, went on strike for the third day in protest to postponement of salary payments and cutting their medical insurance premiums. According to the news, several workers have been arrested during these protests.

Feb. 8, 2023: Farmers in Isfahan gathered in front of the Islamic Republic of Iran Radio and Television in protest to their poor living conditions and demanded for compensation and the right to water from Zayandeh Rood river which has been denied. Residents of the City of Isfahan share the same demands. The farmers were chanting: “Shame on our radio and television”, “Death to this deceitful government”, “Shame on our nonfunctional government.”

Feb. 8, 2023: The cotton farmers of Parsabad, Dashte Moghan, also gathered in front of the governor’s office of the city because of their unpaid cotton production and their poor living conditions. According to the news, nearly one thousand billion tomans worth of cotton has been purchased from these farmers, of which only 200 billion tomans have been deposited into their accounts, and after 4 months, they still have not been paid.

Feb. 8, 2023: International solidarity with workers’ protests and the struggles of people in Iran is widespread. On the 8th of February, the labor unions of ten countries, England, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Spain, Canada, and the United States held rallies in solidarity with the workers and the Iranian people’s revolution; in their statements the unions expressed demands such as unconditional release of imprisoned workers and all political prisoners, an end to the harassment and persecution of labor activists, the recognition of the right to create independent organizations and freedom of workers, abolition of the death penalty and a ban on executions, and Europe’s unconditional support for the Iranian people’s desire for democracy and human rights.

Feb. 5, 2023: The workers of Kavian Steel Company in Ahvaz went on strike protesting the non-implementation of the job classification plan that has been delayed for a year and a half and against the promise of the company’s managers and the low level of their salaries and rallied in front of the entrance of the company. This strike continued in the night shift as well. This company employs one thousand workers and about 700 of them are employed on a temporary basis.

Feb. 4th, 2023:  A group of Isfahan farmers, following their protest gatherings and the non-response to their demands, moved to Tehran with the demand of stopping Zayandeh Rood river water transfer to other provinces that has caused its drought.

Feb. 1st, 2023:  The workers of Felez Rangin copper factory in Babak City in Kerman Province stopped working and gathered in protest due to low salaries and benefits they received and the lack of response to their demands. These workers were in a sit-in and protest the previous night. These workers have been protesting for two weeks. Jan. 31, 2023: The protest rallies of telecommunications retirees in various cities across the country such as Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad, Yazd, Oroumieh, Rasht, Kermanshah, Khoram Abad and Shahre Kord took place in front of the central buildings of telecommunications. Similar protests had occurred in the previous week across Iran. Retirees protested the low level of salaries and poor living conditions and the non-fulfillment of their demands. They demand free universal public health and education, the right to proper housing and an end to corruption and theft of public assets.
