Abbas Deris should be released immediately. July 5,2023
Following the issuance of heavy sentences to protesters and the intensification of the government’s repression against the woman life freedom revolution, the Supreme Judicial Court of the Islamic regime of Iran has confirmed the death sentence of Abbas Deris, one of the detainees of the mass uprising in 2019. This information was reported by his lawyer, Fereshte Taban. Abbas Deris’ case is related to the killing of Nizar Mahshahr by the criminal repressors of the Islamic Republic in 2019. Abbas Deris was arrested that year along with his brother, Mohsen Deris, and has been in prison for 5 years on false charges such as “warfare, disorderly conduct, and participation in the murder of one of the special forces of the police force known as Nopo.”
Abbas Drees has been subjected to brutal torture and even was threatened of the kidnapping of his wife and children in an attempt to forced confessions and advance the fabricated scenarios of the security apparatus of the Islamic regime. Under these pressures, he was forced to make a televised confession about shooting at the police force, which was never true. This is despite the fact that Mahshahr and its peripheral towns were one of the main centers of protests in November 2019, and there are shocking stories of the severity of people’s repression, especially the firing on protesters in Nizar and killing dozens of protesters. .
Abbas Deris, a forty-year-old father of three children, is a worker, and had worked for the Mahshahr Electricity Department for 20 years until he was fired. He was then forced to work as a street trader. During his years in prison, Abbas Deris tried to support his family’s livelihood by making leather handicrafts. Tragically, Abbas’s wife, Kefaye Hizbavi suffered a stroke upon hearing the shocking news of Abbas’s death sentence and passed away soon after.
The Islamic regime, in order to suppress the people’s revolution, has once again brought forward Abbas Deris’ case and issued a death sentence for him. We must stop this criminal decision with massive protests. The family of Abbas Deris has requested help and support from everyone in a letter titled “The Supreme Court of the country has confirmed the cruel death sentence for Abbas.”. In the statement of Abbas Deris’s family’s is stated: “We, the Deris family, request all freedom-loving people and human and international human rights organizations and institutions to try by any means to prevent this sentence being carried out.”
