Today, 29th January 2019, Jafar Azimzadeh, general director of the Free Workers’ Union of Iran was arrested and was taken away to an unknown location by four security agents of Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to the Free Workers Union about one hour after arrest of Azim Zadeh, security forces raided the house of Parvin Mohammadi vice president of the union and arrested her and confiscated her computer and personal belongings.
The Free Workers’ Union of Iran has condemned the arrests and holds Islamic Republic responsible for their lives and safety.
Campaign to Free Jailed Workers in Iran (Free Them Now) strongly condemns the arrests and calls for urgent action by all international workers’ and human rights organisations to demand their immediate and unconditional release.
Recently, after strong strikes and protests in Iran, mainly by sugar cane and steel workers in Khuzestan who mobilised society in support of the workers and put Islamic regime under immense pressure, the Islamic regime has unleashed its security agents and judiciary against the workers. Several activists have been accused of “action against national security” and been arrested. Also families of the workers have gone under pressure by the authorities to not talk publicly against their arrests.
Islamic regime aims to silence the workers and the society that demands the basic rights such as getting paid for the work they do and having the right to organisation and strike.
We call on all workers’ organisations to strongly condemn Islamic Republic of Iran for its vile attack on workers and to demand immediate and unconditional freedom of all jailed workers and political activists.
