The second day of a massive nationwide strike by scaffolding workers in oil industry

According to a report published by the Organizing Council of Oil Contract Workers’ Protests, the scaffolding workers’ strike, which began on June 22nd, has been extended to more than 13 companies in 9 major petrochemical companies,

The protest of these workers is against the low level of wages and the everyday rise in prices of goods. The workers began their strike demanding an increase in wages, twenty days work and ten days off. The emphasis of these workers is on the minimum wage of 25 million tomans (ca $6000/month), and now more workers from refineries and various contracting companies are joining the strike.

According to the Oil Workers’ Organizing Council, while in some places the contractors threatened to fire the workers, saying that there will be no increase in wages, the petrochemical workers declared that if their demands are not met, they will continue their strike in unison.  

In some companies, under pressure from workers ‘protests, the employer has promised to increase the wages to $6000 a month. Those workers who have left the workplace have also announced that they will be willing to return to work only if a new contract is signed.

In its press release, the Organizing Council of Oil Contract Workers’ Protests, emphasized on general assembly to be held and it’s decision be followed by the striking workers. This will strengthen the power of strike against the employers and the authorities. This council also emphasised on the election of the workers’ representatives and negotiation according the demands.

The Organizing Council, asked the workers to be united and protect their solidarity.
