Trade unions and human rights organisations support the oppressed people of Iran

by admin_shahla

Today, once again, we are witnessing the solidarity of the civilised world with the protests and uprisings of the people of Iran in their struggle for liberation and against the brutal crimes and repression of the Islamic Republic. Various labour unions and human rights organisations, through their statements and messages, have condemned the massacre of revolutionary protesters by the Islamic regime’s criminals and have declared their solidarity with workers and the people of Iran.

Some of these expressions of support include:

  • Education International, representing 33 million teachers worldwide, has strongly condemned the violent and armed repression of protesters in Iran and warned about the killing of schoolchildren and minors. The statement stresses that security forces have fired live ammunition at civilians and that the education community is directly under threat. It calls for an immediate end to the violence and emphasises the right to assembly and protest, as well as the safety of schools, universities, teachers, students, and pupils.
  • The CGT in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France, in a resolution issued on 13 January, condemned the criminal repression of the Islamic Republic and declared its full and unconditional solidarity with the people of Iran in their struggle against the repressive, authoritarian, and exploitative Islamic Republic regime. The resolution affirms support for the fundamental demands of the Iranian people, including the complete end of the authoritarian and repressive regime; freedom of organisation, strike, and expression; and full, unconditional equality of rights between women and men, as well as the abolition of all forms of gender-based oppression.
  • Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), one of Spain’s largest trade unions with more than 900,000 members, has once again called on the Spanish government and the international community to adopt a firm stance against human rights violations in Iran. In its statement, the union expressed condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the struggle for freedom and justice and reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with nationwide protests and strikes, as well as with the struggles of the Iranian working class.
  • The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), representing more than 191 million workers worldwide, has issued a statement expressing its support for the popular uprisings in Iran and condemning the regime’s brutal repression of the people.
  • The British Columbia Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU), with 95,000 members, has expressed support for the popular uprisings in Iran and condemned the arrests and repression carried out by the government. This statement was adopted in line with a resolution passed by the BCGEU’s International Solidarity Committee. The union has been among those supporting the Campaign for the Freedom of Imprisoned Workers (Free Them Now), calling for the expulsion of the Islamic Republic from the International Labour Organization and for a global boycott of the regime, and has acted as a voice for the Woman, Life, Freedom revolution.
  • Striking workers at the “Şık Makas” garment factory in Tokat, Turkey, who have been on strike for more than one hundred days, along with the Turkish union BİRTEK-SEN, issued messages expressing their support for protesting workers and people in Iran.
  • Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also published reports on the unlawful use of force and live ammunition by security forces against protesters, resulting in the killing and injury of many civilians. Both organisations have called for an end to the repression and for international investigations into the regime’s crimes.

In today’s emergency conditions, one of the most important factors in preventing further crimes by the brutal Islamic Republic and in bringing the killing and repression to an end is the mobilisation of the broadest possible international support and solidarity.

The Campaign for the Freedom of Imprisoned Workers (Free Them Now) has sent a letter to trade unions worldwide calling for support for the people of Iran, for pressure on the Iranian government to halt the massacre of protesters, and for the unconditional release of all detainees of the revolution and all political prisoners. We call on all trade unions and progressive, humanitarian organisations to widely support workers and the people of Iran and to condemn the crimes of the Islamic Republic.

Because of its horrific and brutal crimes against the people of Iran, the Islamic Republic must be boycotted and isolated internationally and expelled from all international institutions, including the International Labour Organization (ILO). Governments must be pressured to impose a comprehensive boycott on this criminal regime. Every single murderous leader of the Islamic Republic must be tried in international courts—this is the demand of Iran’s justice-seeking people.
