Condemnation of the Death Sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi by the UK Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS)

by admin_shahla

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) in the United Kingdom, in a letter to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London, has condemned the death sentence issued for Sharifeh Mohammadi and called for the annulment of this ruling and the release of Sharifeh and other political prisoners. A copy of this letter, sent today, August 29, has been forwarded by John Moloney, Deputy General Secretary of PCS, to the Campaign to Free Imprisoned Workers (Free Them Now).

The letter states, among other things: I am writing on behalf of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), one of the largest trade unions in the United Kingdom, to express our deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the Iranian Supreme Court’s reinstatement of the death sentence against Sharifeh Mohammadi, a peaceful labour and women’s rights activist.

Ms. Mohammadi has been falsely charged with “armed rebellion against the state,” despite her long-standing commitment to nonviolent advocacy. Her case is emblematic of the escalating repression faced by civil society in Iran. We are equally alarmed by the continued detention and sentencing of Pakhshan Azizi, a humanitarian aid worker punished for assisting women and children displaced by ISIS, and Verisheh Moradi, a member of the East Kurdistan Free Woman Society.

In October 2024, the Supreme Court itself overturned Ms. Mohammadi’s initial sentence due to serious legal flaws. However, in February 2025, a different chamber reinstated the sentence through a process that has been widely condemned as grossly unfair. Since her arrest in December 2023, Ms. Mohammadi has reportedly endured torture, solitary confinement, and denial of her right to a fair trial.

PCS stands in solidarity with Iranian workers and civil society and calls upon your government to:

  • Immediately revoke the death sentences of Sharifeh Mohammadi, Pakhshan Azizi, and Verisheh Moradi.

  • Abolish the death penalty in all forms.

  • Release all political and ideological prisoners unconditionally.

We urge you to convey our concerns to the relevant authorities in Tehran and to advocate for the protection of fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression, association, and peaceful protest.”

The letter further states:“We request a response to this letter and sincerely hope that the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take action in the direction of justice and human dignity.
