On the occasion of October 10th, the International Day Against Death Penalty

05 October 2024

October 10 is the International Day Against Death Penalty. Our call is for a nationwide and widespread protest inside and outside Iran against the executioner regime of Iran.

Following the subsiding of the “woman life freedom” uprising from mass street protests, the Islamic regime turned to large-scale executions to push society back and take back the achievements of the popular uprising. Among them, seven protesters who were arrested during the revolution were hanged, and this government in the last year executed at least 853 people. Even so far this year, until the end of September, around 470 people have been hanged. A high number of these executions is related to drug-related convicts, these victims of the ruling system that are killed to intimidate the whole society. This is while at the moment a number of prisoners are under death sentence, and in this list we see people such as Mrs Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist, Mr Abbas Derees, who was arrested during the People’s Uprising in 2019, and Mujahid Kurkur, a young prisoner arrested during the Woman, life freedom uprising. Moreover, every day the news of more executions by the government are published.

Therefore, one of the main aspects of the people’s struggle now in Iran, is the struggle against executions. In response to this vital and political necessity, a campaign titled “No to Execution Global Campaign” has been launched with the alliance of more than 90 organizations and institutions and hundreds of political figures and individuals. Free Them Now (FTN) is a member of this campaign and also a member of the joint action against the execution of drug convicts, which includes eighty-five other organisations and institutions. With these campaigns, we are preparing to organize massive protests on the occasion of the International Day Against Executions, October 10.

FTN expects the most support from the workers unions in support of the jailed workers and against the executions in Iran.

You can emphasize the points below and send your letters of support to Islamic authorities and UN and ILO and once again to declare your support with Free Them Now (FTN) and the people of Iran against executions:

1-Death penalty in Iran in any form should be banned and stopped immediately

2- We continue to support people’s protests in Iran and the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign by political priosners

3- We condemn the executions in Iran and emphasize that all death sentences, including the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist imprisoned in Lakan Rasht prison, and Abbas Derees, one of the detainees of the popular uprising of 2019, should be immediately cancelled and they should be released unconditionally.
