Amir Raisian, the defence lawyer of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a worker activist and political prisoner in Lakan Prison in Rasht, has announced that the death sentence of his client has been confirmed by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic.
Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Rasht had previously sentenced Sharifeh Mohammadi, to death. After an appeal, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court overturned the ruling due to numerous flaws, including lack of connection to armed operations, failure to prove membership in an armed or insurgent group, and significant issues with the investigators’ report, and referred the case to another branch.
Accordingly, her case was reviewed again by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Rasht, but this branch once again issued a death sentence. After the renewed ruling, her lawyers once again appealed, and the case was sent back to Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.
However, her execution order was reinstated despite major legal flaws and lack of evidence. The verdict of Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court was merely a repetition of the previous ruling of Branch 1, and she was once again sentenced to death. Her lawyer, Amir Raisian, objected: “Despite the fact that none of the flaws previously identified by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court—on the basis of which the ruling was overturned—have been addressed, this time the branch has confirmed the death sentence.”
The renewed death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi has sparked a wave of protests from the people of Rasht, as well as teachers, retirees, and labor organizations all over the country. Let us condemn this criminal ruling against Sharifeh Mohammadi through widespread protests.
The Islamic regime is a regime of executions and crimes, and its survival depends on the continuation of brutality. By confirming the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, the regime is in fact responding to the protests of workers, retirees, and ordinary people who demanded that she be freed. But this ruling will only fuel greater social anger, outrage, and public protest.
Let us all unite against prisons and executions, and by insisting on stopping executions and resisting the government’s repression, pave the way for our revolution. The death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi must be immediately overturned, and she must be unconditionally releaseds.
