On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, a delegation composed of Hashem Fazeli, Abbas Mandegar, and Behnam Fazeli, representing the “Free Them Now” campaign to free jailed workers in Iran, as well as the Freedom of Political Prisoners’ Committee, met and held discussions with Ms. Amal Al-Houdari, the UN Human Rights Officer (Middle East Office).
In this meeting, a detailed report was presented on the situation of imprisoned workers in Iran and their families, activists at risk of execution, and the rising number of executions in Iran. The discussions continued with an in-depth update on the latest developments in the truck drivers’ strike, including details of those arrested in various cities.
During this meeting, letters from “Free Them Now” protesting the Islamic Republic’s presence in the ILO were submitted, emphasizing the need for Iran’s expulsion from the ILO and its global boycott due to its crimes against workers and humanity as such, also for everyday violating ILO conventsiosn. These letters were accompanied by explanatory reports and photographs.
As part of the discussions, concerns were raised about the presence of representatives from the Islamic regime in human rights institutions, especially the participation of those responsible for workers’ repression falsely introduced as “representatives of workers” at the ILO conference. The question was raised: while the Islamic regime has been condemned by human rights organizations for crimes against humanity, why has no practical or punitive action been taken against it?
The delegation stressed the necessity of expelling representatives of the Islamic regime from ILO and of officially regarding the regime’s repressive forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as terrorist organizations.
The UN Human Rights Council official expressed support for the delegation’s position during the discussions and stated that all available means and resources would be used to put pressure on the Islamic regime regarding its repression and executions. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing communication and contacts.
